ABIA, U. of Akron to launch program for women entrepreneurs

The Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron and the University of Akron are planning to launch in January a semester-long educational program aimed at women entrepreneurs. The program will provide participants with access to experts, coaching by successful entrepreneurs, contact with cutting-edge technology and support in forming companies and licensing ideas.

NASA’s chief of space medicine looks around Akron for ‘disruptive innovation’ to help astronauts

NASA's chief of space medicine visited biomedical engineering students at the University of Akron today, as well as doctors and researchers at Summa Health System in Akron, the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy in Rootstown and the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron to find disruptive medical innovations that can help take care of astronauts.

BioInnovation Institute in Akron takes name of heart surgeon, retiring Knight Foundation chairman

On its first anniversary, the BioInnovation Institute in Akron added "Austen" to its name, recognizing internationally renown heart surgeon and retiring Knight Foundation Chairman Dr. W. Gerald Austen and his wife Patricia R. Austen. In its first year, the bioinnovation institute has hired an experienced CEO, launched five centers of excellence, attracted nationally recognized board members, and academic and clinical researchers.

A bigger role for Ohio nurses (just in the nick of time)

Margaret Wineman, dean at the College of Nursing at the University of Akron, wants a greater role for nurses in medical homes, primary care, wellness and fighting the H1N1 flu. Some of her thoughts would require changes in Ohio law. But Wineman thinks proposed legislation on medical homes could open the door to expand duties for nurse practitioners.

Technology transfer grows at U.S. research institutions

Technology transfer -- moving research out of institutions and into companies that can develop and market products with it -- was a healthy enterprise nationwide in fiscal 2007. Northeast Ohio institutions were more successful than those elsewhere in the state at leveraging research spending with licensing revenues.
